Class exercise in creative analysis

Excerpt from the analysis:

Ruby's imaginary world versus the real world actually serve as two dimensions that both express our own world, the false world in which the battered figures gather is like a metaphor for the real world. The narrative dimension contains within it pain, violence, sickness and evil that also characterize the real world - the story reflects the world in which we live and with the help of the character of Ruby the reader experiences a spring that presents the truth through the lie. The pit serves as a conduit between the various spaces and simulates the fiction in the story and even serves as an allegory for Robbie's awareness and conscience.
